9 Things You Should Clean More in The Kitchen

After a month of being sick a while back and still being worn down from it, I realized there are simply a lot of things in the kitchen that get missed when you are not feeling super up to cleaning. I am not the perfect housewife. Who is?

Nine things you should clean more in your kitchen. www.simplymoms.net

The refrigerator coils.

What is that? Yup, that is the coils under my fridge. The were vacuumed about two weeks ago. With our dogs, and kids running in and out dust accumulates fast. With all that dust your fridge and mine will not run efficiently. Vacuum them often. To keep your fridge running well and to cut down on your power bill.

remember to clean your refrigerator coils it will run better and save on your power bill

The sink sprayer.

My kitchen sink sprayer every so often seems to get a mind of its own and spray everywhere or slow to a trickle. Soaking the sprayer in a cup of vinegar will remove all the nasty hard water build up.

Cleaning the sink sprayer will help it spray better.

Oh, my gosh behind that sink!

**Blush** Yes I do clean it but with five other people using the sink and a toddler playing at it this happens fast and can be overlooked. I spray bleach behind here and it all whitens right back up.

Cleaning behind your kitchen sink

The microwave so used and often so forgotten.

Yes, it happens to the best of us. My kids tend not to cover anything so we end up with this. However a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice microwaved for 4 minutes or so and left to sit for 15 minutes (Let the steam build; so do not open the door) and after just wipe it all away. Easy peasy.

Microwave cleaning tips

Under the stove and other large appliances

Yes, they are heavy but, please pull them out every so often and clean. Have a big strong type help move them.  😉 Or give you a workout. And no lol that is not a dead rat way under there it is cardboard. Thank you, Miss Toddler for the heart fail.

Cleaning under appliances

The oven (Is something burning?)

Every so often my husband will ask me what I am burning. Generally, I start the oven after someone spilled something once again in the bottom of the oven. Of course, my intent is to clean it right away. Well, that was the intent anyhow. My oven is self-cleaning. It is a blessing and a curse. It cleans great but heats my house up better than the furnace and the smoke and fumes are terrible. Not to mention it is expensive to run.

Cleaning the oven

The dishwasher just because it washes does not mean it is clean!

How does it even happen? I mean it washes? But yes it needs cleaning. I run it with nothing but a bowl full of vinegar on the top rack at the hottest setting. After I wipe down all the edges and seal.

dishwasher cleaning tip

That overflowing junk drawer.

I think we all know it needs to be done and many of us just shove the drawer shut again or even um… start another junk drawer.

Clean out the junk drawer

Yes, even those window tracks.

Winter is over.  So we all need to remember to let in the fresh air minus all the dusty dirty window tracks and screens. I simply wipe them down including the screen while I am at it.

Clean the window tracks and screens

Now… I am off to cleancleaning smiley

Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Dead in Three Months

I am really not one to post a negative review and I will say some good will come out it from Whirlpool themselves. However, this “top of the line”  washing machine became a huge waste of not only money but time as well.

Whirlpool Cabrio Review

The little things I did not like.

This machine is a non-agitator top loading machine. I seriously wanted one and drooled over this machine for the longest time. I got it home and realized  I am 5’2″ tall I can not reach the inside bottom of this machine without leaning half in and having to hyperextend my arm.If there is a sock or something very flat at the bottom I struggle to fish it out. It makes doing laundry for this short lady a task.

Whirlpool Cabrio Drum

You can not just toss laundry in. It needs to be loaded around the tiny “agitator” plate and not cover it. Otherwise, things will become unbalanced and not wash properly.

Speaking of not washing properly sheets, comforters and other large items tend to get stretched out across the load and the middle does not get wet or wash at all sometimes. That one spot on the stretched item will just remain dry and unwashed because the water jets spray around the edges.

The tinted glass makes it hard to see in the machines. It is not a big deal for the dryer but because of the issues with the washer, it would be nice to make sure the load is washing properly so if you had to you could readjust it.

The positive things.

I love the color of the machines they are a shiny gray they refer to as chrome.

The dryer seems to work well it has a ton of settings including steam (However I do not have the water hooked up to it so no idea how well that works.)

The tinted glass does look nice.

The dryer’s lint screen is super easy to clean out.

Happy Three Months The Washer Is Dead

Yup, you read that right the washer is dead. One night it started flashing error codes and whirlpool said to unplug it for five minutes, plug it back in and it would be fine. WRONG, so wrong. I plugged it back in thinking I would get back to washing clothes. It would not power back on. Dead as a doornail. That was well over a month ago. The story gets even better. You ready for this?

We got online and contacted Whirlpool that night and set up warranty service for the next day. Awesome! Just a little hick up. Or so we thought.

The repair man came out. Surprise, it is broken. (You don’t say?)It needed a panel and board. He ordered the parts assuring us it would take a week to ten days. It’s been a month plus. We have put in call after call to the repair place. Nope, no part. Nope, they can’t track it? (The repair place is a whole other nightmare)

So with it being over the month mark we are frustrated and decide to figure out ourselves where the part is. Interestingly they do not know. How can they not know? They sent it. So they tell my husband they will send another and expedite it. A week later still no part. So My husband calls Whirlpool AGAIN. He gets a supervisor on the phone guess what? That part is on back order.

Whirlpool’s Resolution

This supervisor did take the time to listen to the whole situation and she did admit that these washers are an issue.(Hence the reason the parts are on back order) In fact, they are redesigned now or in the process of it. After listening she told him to pick a new washer and they would ship it. So now we are waiting on a new front loader to show up. So I am unhappy that they made such a horrible machine that seems to be failing for a lot of people. With that said I am happy my husband really pressed the issue with them and they found a way to resolve it. I am praying the new machine is far better and last like my other Whirlpool front loader did.

As for the repair man, the place they warranted through is a complete joke and he seems to be collecting warranty work money and never finishing it. he has complaints through the BBB, and tons of bad reviews online for horrible treatment of customers. Much of the same issues we had with him. I tend to think he got the first part and used it elsewhere. He promised us a loner machine over a week ago and never brought it he was a no call no show day after day. Shaking my head.

As Pa Ingalls said, “Alls well that ends well.”

I dislike posting negative reviews but, I also feel with the priceyness of this item buyers should be forewarned. I wish I was.

Chores and how to Successfully get the Children to Help

It often gets asked on the Simply Moms facebook Group how do you get your children to do chores? How much do you pay them to help out? Why won’t my kids clean their room and messes?

Having personally been through many stages of parenting. I have raised that child who does not want to lift a finger, the one who cleans everything in sight because they have OCD tendencies and all those in between.

Chores and getting children to help. www.simplymoms.net

I have been successful however in getting every child in my home to help out right down to Little Miss Toddler.

  1. Start when they are very young.

While a two-year-old will not have anywhere near the skills of your six or twelve-year-olds they can still help out with small age appropriate jobs and they should. This starts a firm foundation for life of understanding the value of being part of the family unit.

  2. We do not pay for chores.

No-one pays mom to wash everyone’s dishes or wash clothes that everyone wore. We do not pay children for daily chores they are simply part of being a family and always have been. That has been our rule from day one. We pay with thank yous and I love yous.

  3. There are no assigned chores.

We do things as they need to be done. Some days my son doesn’t mind dealing with the trash and other days he would rather go out and snow blow.  I tend to just call on the children as things need to be done so they are not stuck doing the same thing day after day.  It keeps the monotony at bay.

  4. Together is always more fun.

If the yard needs cleaning you will find most of our family out there together cleaning. Even small things like dishes or cleaning a room are always more fun with help. Like the old saying, many hands make for light work.

  5. Make a game of it.

Often times I will set a timer and we will race to see who can do the most. Or have a little one Play basketball with laundry that needs to be tossed in a hamper. We even incorporate learning with Little Miss Toddler such as asking her to pick up all the green blocks or pick up all the round toys.

  6. Give the whole family a reward for those big jobs.

When the barn needing cleaning at the end of the weekend we all had a big cookout to celebrate. It’s not the same as a set allowance per chore it is more a celebration of coming together and working hard.

  7. Hold that Wifi!

For the older children who love their computer time and such, we simply shut down the Wi-fi until things are done. Even as an adult I find it easier to get things done if I am no longer “connected”. It is a great incentive to get things done.

  8. Keep the rules simple.

I have always taught my children you use it you put it away. You drop it you pick it up. It keeps it simple and them accountable for themselves.

  9. Cut down on things.

As a family, we have cut way back on the clutter in our lives. It makes it far more easy to clean not only for myself but for the children to help out as well.

  10. Have a place for everything.

If your children know where things go it will make helping with chores and be cleaning up after themselves much easier for you and them. When I need my can opener I know just where to look. Because everyone in the family knows where to put it after it has been used. A place for everything and everything in its place.

How do you get your children to help with chores?

The Word Friendly and Why I Had Stopped Blogging

I joined up Mama Kat’s Writing’s Workshop about a month or so ago. When I joined I was writing pretty regular and getting to know some of the pretty friendly people that also blog and join her link up.  I have known what the prompts were this week for a while now and just keep drawing a blank. Even still as I sit here my mind is just totally frozen. In fact, I have barely blogged at all. But I picked a prompt the word friendly.

So, really no blogs from me this week.

Why?

Because of life. Life just threw up all over me and I have not been feeling friendly, happy or like blogging at all.

I have been filling my mind with things like playing Ring Around The Rosie with little Miss Toddler. I sing she sings she holds my hands while jumping wildly on my bed and then we all fall down just so I can hear her laugh. Her laugh that makes everything right in this sometimes very, very messy unfriendly world.

I have been cleaning in a circle like I often do when I am stressed because my ADHD like symptoms show up uninvited when my world brings me for a ride that leaves me hanging on by a thread. This really mean the house is cleaned sub-par for my mind is hyper-focused on other things. So many things get started and left while I trail off to the next.

I wouldn’t call it depression. Maybe frustration that there are certain things in life that I can not fix. Or that nagging feeling I get that tells my mind something is off in life or coming at me and it eats away at me until it finally happens. By the time it happens, I am relieved in one aspect it did, it’s over and now it is about just getting back up and dusting myself off. Righting all those wrongs.

I have decided though it is time to just breath. Let things be and get back to being friendly, and doing the things that make my life have more joy and stop letting life sit so heavy on my shoulders for a while. Breath in … breath out. Ahhh much better already… right?

So while this is a lame blog post it is the start of pulling my boots back on by the straps. Therapeutic perhaps? 🙂

Tell me, when life does you wrong how do you bounce back?

And I will leave you with some happy moments from my week in case you have been missing our photos.

5 Habits To A Cleaner Home

I know that maintaining a clean home does not come naturally to everyone. Some people really struggle with the day to day tasks of housekeeping. I realized I have habits that help keep my home fairly clean. I want to share them with you.

Habits to a cleaner home

My personal rule is I do not leave a room without leaving it just a little bit better than I found it. I also try very hard to get my family members to do this. What can I say it is a work in progress for the most part they try. If I walk into the bathroom and there is a towel on the floor I pick it up. If there are glasses on the kitchen table I place them in the sink. I do not complain about who left it I just leave the room better. It helps keep the room cleaned up.

I am a coffee lover. However, I hate dealing with the dishwasher and dishes away so as a personal rule if I am making a pot of coffee I deal with the dishes while it is brewing.  The two now go hand in hand. I also use this time to switch laundry.

Instead of folding everyone’s clothes and putting them away I make piles and deliver them to the person’s room unfolded. They know they are to promptly put them away. It keeps the laundry off my kitchen table in a huge pile which always looks messy.

On really lazy days I set a timer for five minutes and I set forth to do the one thing I am dreading for only that amount of time. Once I start it gets easier to tackle the rest of the cleaning.  Some days I will just clean each room for five minutes. You would be surprised what you can accomplish in a short amount of time

I don’t have more of any one thing than I need. We do not keep Knick knacks laying around. What we do have has very specific places where they belong. Even the toddler knows where her things go and can easily help during clean up time. Reducing clutter leaves less to clean and fuss over.

What are your cleaning habits?

When Should a Child Do Chores (A Guest Post)

Child_Helping_with_chores

Doing chores is something that sooner or later every child should be involved in. However, there is no right moment to start teaching children to clean. No matter the age, all of them are able to take part in the housework, even if it goes about a symbolic participation. While toddlers can pick up toys and fill the dog’s food dish, a 6-year-old can sort laundry and set the table. With patience and positive attitude, everyone can help their child to build the habit of cleaning.

If you are a proactive parent, who is determined to familiarize their child with the domestic chores, here is what kind of help you can expect from children at different ages.

Chores for children between ages 2 and 3

It is pretty easy to involve children on this age in the cleaning because they accept everything as a game. For instance, if you clap your hands when your child puts a napkin in the garbage bin, they will like that and definitely do it again. The other thing about toddlers is that they are pretty curious and sometimes take the initiative to help even if we haven’t asked them for that. In such moments, the best you can do is to show your child that they are doing something good and you are very happy with that. In this way, you can teach your toddler to put the toys on their place, put clothes in the laundry basket, wipe the exterior of the appliances, dust and other simple tasks.

Chores for children between ages 4 and 8

If your child is in this group, you only need to find the right strategy for involving them in the cleaning and very soon you will have a little helper at your disposal. Fortunately, these children are easy to trick. Promise them that you will take them to the cinema or the fun fair and they will accomplish all cleaning duties that you wish. These children are able to cover chores such as making the bed, sort the laundry, sweep the floor, clear the table, etc.

Chores for children between ages 9 and 12

These children will fabricate all kind of excuses with the sole purpose of getting away with the cleaning. It won’t be so easy to make a 10-year-old help you with the housework if they haven’t done it before. However, when there is a will, there is a way. If you are persistent enough eventually your child will start putting the groceries in the fridge and the kitchen pantries, vacuum, fold clothes, peel vegetables, change the bed sheets and mop the floor.

Chores for children on 13 years old and older

If you have a teenager at home you can count on them for a variety of household duties, such as do the laundry, iron clothes, clean the kitchen, wash the windows, clean the bathroom and much more. Teenagers, however, prefer to be engaged in much more interesting activities than cleaning and you can often be confronted with their refusal to participate in the housework. In such cases cleaners from End of Tenancy Cleaning Agency West London advise that the best thing you can do is to speak with them and explain that the whole family needs to participate in the housework.

It is never too early or too late to get your child involved in the housework. Children adapt easily to everything, moreover, cleaning can be a very good way for them to learn what is teamwork and that just like the other members of the family, they also need to contribute to the family life.

Bio: Baily loves to help and share her experience. She is a small company owner that provides End of Tenancy Cleaning Agency West London, but most of her time is filled with laughter and cries from her two kids. Having your children help, could be a time saver and a great way to keep them busy.

Review of My Pets Friend Pet Stain and Odor Remover

If you have pets that pee on the floor you are going to want to read about this pet stain and odor remover from the Dollar Tree.

We have these Poodles. Two of them and they are demon spawns naughty, crazy and sweet all in one. Lucky and Levi. They are from the same litter and have the same issue and they have had this little issue for all the eight years we have owned them.

Poodle wall of shame

Yes, they like to pee inside. On my chair, on the floor, on my trash can. We have scolded, attempted to retrain, ignored, taken them out more and more piled on praise for outside potty time and just cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. Still, they continue to do their business as they please inside.

I was talking to my someday daughter in law about the issue. We both just thought that even though I scrub, steam clean and scrub some more their little poodle noses can still smell their pee. I mentioned that I saw a cheap version of enzyme cleaner at the Dollar Tree. Well, her sweet Zoey had an accident the other night so she stopped at the Dollar Tree and grabbed two bottles. One for her and one for little  me. Bless her heart! Little did I know this stuff was going to instantly change my life! Well, not really but, at the very least stop me from asking company if they can smell dog pee odors. LOL

Pet Stain Remover From The Dollar Tree

No, of course I didn’t spray the doggie. 😉

I went right to his favorite spot that had been steam cleaned but, still had faint traces of dog urine and I let that chair have it. Then I went around and sprayed every other favorite pee spot. I let it sit and dry. This morning, I got down and smelled that chair and the smell is gone! Not even a trace of the nasty dog urine smell. Get this… it smells pleasant now!

Something else I noticed the dog has stopped sniffing around it like he did before.  So far today no accidents. I am not holding my breath on being so Lucky it cured the issue but personally I think it is helping.

My Pets Friend Pet Stain and Oder Remover

This product is sold at the Dollar Tree. I am not affiliated with the Dollar Tree nor this product. I am simply reviewing it because it works.

The Directions on the bottle are simple.

  1. You need to soak up all the pee.
  2. Then you must spray the cleaner very generously on the stain insuring if it is on a carpet it gets well into the pad.
  3. You need to rub the product into any stains on your carpet or upholstery.
  4. Then let everything  air dry.

This is just what I did on an OLD stain and it worked. I will tell you on the chairs I had steam cleaned before hand but those smells were well set in. The smell of urine is now completely gone..

If you have pets this is a must buy at the Dollar Tree.

And Lucky Ole boy we still love you even with all your imperfections you are still family.

This Mom Life and Making Room for Blogging

Sometimes this mom life and/or grandma life gets in the way of doing the other things I enjoy. Such as blogging today. I think it is safe to say you can all relate. So I am just going to tell you a bit about my Moms Life day because, it is my goal to make room for blogging in some form each day even if it is in the wee early morning hours. It gives me a nice platform to be a bit creative 🙂  and connect with other moms .

I cleaned today. There is a big surprise. However it seems I have been quickly losing steam lately. Midafternoon I was bored out of my mind, didn’t want to clean anything more  and was seriously thinking of any excuse to get out of the house. So I mentioned to hubby I would like to go to Best Buy to checkout  their cameras.

I am not by any scope of the imagination a photographer but this is what we came up with.

Nikon – COOLPIX B500 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera in Plum

Ahhh, she is so beautiful <3 LOVE!!!

Nikon Cool Pix

We are just waiting to get our taxes back. I played with it in the store and just loved the ease of use and the way it felt in my hand. I don’t care too much about the color but the hubby would like to see me have it in the plum color so if they have it in that color I’ll be getting that if not black is great too. The camera I have now is a FUJIFILM and it is the biggest piece of junk I have ever laid my hands on. Though to-day. I did charge its batteries and such because I do not think the cell phone pics are helping my blog much *sigh* . So that is that I am waiting on a new camera and super excited too! Then no more blurry, weird, mistimed photos. Well, at least not so often 😉 .

So after I tossed batteries in my camera I snapped a photo to make sure it was working in some capacity.

This is our miniature poodle mid face lick. Such a handsome old boy. He is Little Miss Toddlers best buddy. So very tolerant and loving with her. He loves her even more when she has a bread crust or some other yummy morsel in her hand. LOL But, he feels that way about all of us. Miss Toddler loves slipping him treats. I think he has put on considerable weight in her presence .

White Miniture Poodle

Little Miss Toddlers newest thing is using her “colors” crayons. (See why Little Miss Toddler is all wet below .)

She is very insistent though YOU color for her or watch her color. What ever at the moment suits her fancy. Tonight she captured Pop-Pop as a coloring partner. He looks adorable seated at her tiny Minnie Mouse table coloring . He is such a good father and Pop-Pop. Aways making time for the things that really matter like “colors” and snuggle time.

Colors with Pop-Pop

There is something else Little Miss Toddler likes even more than her colors and I am sure if you looked at the photo of her coloring you saw she was a very , very wet child. She enjoys this so much … She calls this “washing dishes” How ever she is not really allowed to wash dishes. What she is doing is making puddles of water. Lots of water. She is also soaking her clothing. This right here is her happiest of activities. Me, I am not a fan, LOL but I let her supervised hoping one day soon she will tire of it or turn into a tween who just thinks washing dishes is fabulous! Okay wishful thinking I know.

Toddler water play

We had a pretty simple dinner of Chop Suey and rolls. I have been craving it and the hubby is not always a fan so it was easy and yummy. The boys were thrilled as they all love pasta in any form.

Now I am off to wash towels (the work never ends) and go to bed. <–Yay!

Be sure to check out our Facebook Group and maybe show us some love on Twitter we will always Love ya right back 🙂

My Frugal .69 Cent Closet Makeover

Not every little update in your home has to break your bank account. Nor does it have to be perfect. Just functional. Like this frugal closet makeover.

The one thing when we moved into this house that I never cared for was this horrible “linen closet” It may have even have been used as a pantry at one time prior to us living here. Personally, I Use it for towels and so forth because it is right out side the bathroom. The place we live in is a rental and to be truthful I am not investing too much into it time or money. So I sort of fixed it up quick and on the extreme cheap. I didn’t do any thing fancy, or impressive I am simply sharing so the next person can get ideas and yeah maybe even do better than I did so if you did a more impressive closet makeover be sure to share it in the comments below.

Closet makeover needed

As you can see it is a mess! I’m not trying to hide that.

The plastic shopping bags were out of control. I bagged them all in one big bag and put them on a shelf in the barn. I discovered dog food had been spilled, not that I can say I am surprised in this horrific mess. This also I am sure gives you a pretty good idea of why something needed to be done with this closet. Yuck! My towels are not pictured because they were all in the washer. My little closet makeover is way overdue.

I swept it out and quickly wiped it down. Not that it helped much but, that didn’t really matter because I just wanted it to be clean for painting.

I slapped a couple of layers of paint on that we had. So that cost to me was pretty much nothing.  You can still see it is not perfect but, that is really ok by me. It no longer looks like the Chokey on Matilda. I even painted the floor.  I may just but some stick on tiles since I would not need too many and they not too costly.

Not bad for quick and what was already laying around.

Tonight while I was at Kmart I saw that Christmas wrapping paper was 90% off. So I grabbed a roll that was screaming Merry Christmas! It was a whole .69 cents. Nice thick good quality paper. Yes, I could have gone to the Dollar Tree but, I was at Kmart when the idea hit me LOL. My idea was to do every shelf but, surprise… The upper two shelves do not remove. So I just painted those it was easier.

Yes, I know the pictures are not great quality but here is where the rest of the wrapping paper went with a bit left over for some more fun. She has a blast drawing on her huge paper. So, for .69 cents a couple of shelves got covered and Miss Toddler had fun and my closet looks way better.

Nothing overly extreme or fancy but, it certainly looks much fresher and all the clutter is gone and it is nice and tidy.

To be honest it looks nicer in person. Time to get a camera that is not on my cell phone. 🙂

Update: I even have enough paper left to do my drawers. This mom is getting things done.

Before… how utterly embarrassing.

And after.

Thanks for reading.
